The department of electronic and computer Bioengineering, entrusted to prof. Leandro Pecchia, returning to Italy thanks to the support of Intesa Sanpaolo and the Biomedical University Foundation, was presented.
With the support of Intesa Sanpaolo and the Biomedical University Foundation, the Campus Bio-Medico University brings back to Italy one of the most influential biomedical engineers worldwide: prof. Leandro Pecchia, President of the European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES), Secretary General of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), WHO consultant for technologies for Covid-19 and member of the Technical Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Health for medical devices. Following a long experience in the United Kingdom at the universities of Sheffield, Nottingham and Warwick, prof. Pecchia will now be a lecturer in electronics and computer bioengineering at the UCBM Departmental Faculty of Engineering and will direct the new Research Unit in “Intelligent Health Technology”, thanks to the collaboration between the Biomedical University Foundation and Intesa Sanpaolo.
On the ceremony for the assignment of the new role, Prof. Leandro Pecchia gave a keynote speech on how the global biomedical engineering community closely works with NGOs and the United Nations to narrow the gap between high- and low/middle-income countries in their access to essential health services. According to the WHO, at least half of the world’s population has no access to essential health services. To facilitate the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the community works to ” Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages ” (goal number 3 of the 2030 Agenda) all over the world.
The following speakers took the floor at the meeting: Carlo Tosti, UCBM President, Federica Marchini, Board Member of the Biomedical University Foundation, Elisa Zambito Marsala, Head of Social Enhancements of the office and Relations with Universities – Intesa Sanpaolo, Eugenio Guglielmelli, UCBM Rector, Claudia Peverini, Program Director – Department of Engineering University of Cambridge and Andrea Rossi, UCBM Chief Executive Officer and General Manager.
The contribution also stems from the precious commitment of Dr. Stefano Lucchini, Chief Institutional Affairs and External Communication Officer of Intesa Sanpaolo and member of the Advisory Board of the Foundation, and his constant effort to support the Foundation, the Campus and several projects in the fields of training, research and assistance.
